A Lifetime of Service in Probate and Estate Planning

For over 45 years, I have practiced probate law and advised clients on simple estate planning throughout the Milwaukee area. I believe in keeping things as clear and straightforward as possible. Before offering any advice, I take the time to discuss all available options so my clients understand their choices and feel comfortable moving forward.

Many people want to know who they are working with before they call an attorney. Below is a little more about my background, my education, and the path that led me to where I am today.

Milwaukee Roots and a Blue‑Collar Upbringing

I was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and grew up in Cudahy, where I was raised in a traditional blue‑collar family. I lived in the home my grandfather built, with my grandparents and aunt living downstairs and my parents and I living upstairs. Both sides of my family came to the United States from Europe, became citizens, and worked hard to build a life here.

Three of my four grandparents spent many years working at the Patrick Cudahy meatpacking plant. My father worked as a tool and die maker, and my mother worked as an executive secretary. Although we lived modestly, my parents always made sure I had the best clothing, books, and education they could provide.

I attended public schools in Cudahy and graduated from Cudahy High School before continuing my education.

Education and Path to Law School

I attended Carroll College in Waukesha, where I earned a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in history and political science and a minor in business administration. After completing my undergraduate studies, I went on to Marquette University Law School, graduating in May of 1977.

The very next day, I was sworn in as a member of the Wisconsin Bar, and I have been practicing law ever since.

Over 45 Years of Legal Experience

My legal career began at the Milwaukee law firm of Seher and Seher, which focused on probate, estate planning, and income taxation. After two years, I opened my own practice in Hales Corners in 1979, concentrating on probate and estate planning.

In 1982, I joined two other attorneys to form the firm Cross, Hackbart, and Groh on Bluemound Road in Milwaukee. Over the years, the firm changed as partners came and went, and in 1995 the partnership dissolved. I remained at the same location as a sole practitioner, running the office and leasing space to other attorneys with their own practices.

After 30 years on Bluemound Road, I moved my practice in 2013 to South Milwaukee, where I continue to serve the working families and individuals who rely on my guidance.

Life Outside the Office

While the law has been my profession for more than four decades, I have many interests outside of work.

Music

I have played the saxophone since I was eight years old and consider myself a semi‑professional musician. Around 1990, I studied jazz at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music for three years. Today, I perform with:

  • A long‑standing, award‑winning Milwaukee swing band
  • A local symphonic band
  • A saxophone quartet
  • A local rock band

Sports and Hobbies

I am an avid golfer and try to play as often as the weather allows. I am also a lifelong Milwaukee Brewers fan, holding a partial season ticket package.

Reading and History

Like many attorneys, I enjoy reading. My favorite subjects include early American history, Russian history, and twentieth‑century European history.

Gardening and Lawn Care

I also enjoy lawn care and gardening, which give me a chance to unwind and spend time outdoors..

A Straightforward Approach to Helping Clients

My goal has always been to make the legal process easier to understand. Whether you are planning ahead or handling the estate of a loved one, I take the time to explain your options in plain language and help you choose the path that best fits your needs.
